Interning with TEC is an exciting and fun way to help the environment and to start your career in the environmental field in TN. We seek and can utilize volunteers from all over Tennessee! The length of the internship is decided during the hiring discussion.
About the internship
The Recycling Roundups Intern will gain hands-on experience while supporting the planning, outreach, and execution of community recycling events across Tennessee. This is a great opportunity for a student or emerging professional interested in sustainability, waste diversion, nonprofit management, community engagement, marketing, or event planning. The internship is hybrid and based in Nashville, with occasional opportunities to travel throughout Tennessee for Recycling Roundup events, including some weekends and overnight stays. Approved travel expenses will be covered by TEC, and mileage will be reimbursed when use of a personal vehicle is required. This is an unpaid internship and may qualify for academic credit depending on the requirements of the intern’s college or university.
Responsibilities
- Assist with planning and coordinating Recycling Roundup events
- Support community outreach, sponsorships, and partnership development
- Create educational and marketing materials, including flyers, graphics, and social media content
- Help maintain program spreadsheets, reports, records, and event data
- Communicate with recycling partners, volunteers, and community stakeholders
- Assist with event setup, operations, and cleanup
- Research recycling resources, outreach opportunities, potential partners, and media contacts

About the internship
The Tennessee Tree Day Intern works closely with the Tree Day Team to organize and execute one of the largest single-day tree-planting events in the nation, known as Tennessee Tree Day. Tree Day takes place annually each March, but requires year-round planning, reporting, and action. The Tree Day Intern communicates with numerous stakeholders, including sponsors, volunteers, and partners throughout the state. They track the number of trees being distributed, create visually appealing information, and assist in marketing and outreach. During Tree Day, they assist with logistics, delivery, issue resolution, and evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Attend regular weekly meetings
- Communicate with the supervisor daily
- Development – sponsor outreach and grant writing
- Marketing – create designs for social media content (i.e., how to care for trees)
- Logistics – Tree Day outreach and vetting of tree Pick-Up Sites
- Other programmatic priorities as needed

About the internship
The Communications Intern will play a vital role in amplifying the mission of the Tennessee Environmental Council. This position offers hands-on experience in digital storytelling, environmental advocacy, and community engagement. You will work directly with the Director of Communications to bridge the gap between our statewide initiatives and the public.
Responsibilities
- Content Creation: Draft and schedule engaging posts for LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram (including Reels) to highlight our current projects and impact.
- Newsletter Production: Assist in curating and laying out the TEC “Good News Monday” newsletter, gathering updates from various initiative leads.
- Initiative Storytelling: Touch base with initiative managers (Tree, Compost, Watershed, Pollinator, and Recycling Initiatives) to capture photos, testimonials, and data for public updates.
- Community Engagement: Monitor social media interactions and help foster an active, informed online community.
